2021 Honda Odyssey Review
Serving Gastonia, NC, Charlotte, and Rock Hill
Although the typical minivan is not exactly the type of vehicle people rush into showrooms to buy, the Honda Odyssey has managed to distinguish itself with its combination of attractive design, interior roominess, remarkable driving performance, and a plethora of tech features. Consequently, the nameplate is still going strong three decades into its existence; it is currently in its fifth production cycle.
For 2021, Honda made some mild styling updates to the exterior. The grille now looks more like that of the Pilot SUV and Ridgeline pickup. In addition, the Honda Sensing suite of driver-assistance technologies—automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, collision mitigation braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and lane keep assist, road departure mitigation, and traffic sign recognition—is now standard across the trim levels, which still remain the LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Elite.
|Specs||2021 Honda Odyssey LX|
|Fuel Economy (City/Hwy)**||19 city / 28 hwy mpg**|
|Standard Engine||3.5L i-VTEC® V6|
|Multi-Angle Rearview Camera||Standard|
A 280-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 ensures that you get spirited acceleration for a minivan with the 2021 Odyssey. Towing capability is also impressive; it tops off at 3,500 lbs. The engine is glued to a 10-speed automatic transmission, which consequently makes for smooth shifts due to its large number of gears. The EPA rating for the Odyssey is 19/28 city/highway mpg**, with is above average for its class.
Interior and Technology
No other minivan has spill-resistant fabric-trimmed seats; that’s a feature unique to the Honda Odyssey. Three rows seat up to seven people on the LX due to its second row of captain’s seats; the other trims have a second-row bench-style seat to increase maximum occupancy to eight. Also present on the non-LX trims is Honda’s Magic Slide system for the second row for adjustment to make entry into the third row much easier. The front includes 8-way power on the driver’s seat and 4-way power on the front passenger seat. The EX welcomes enhancement such as front-seat heating and driver-side 12-way power adjustability with 4-way power lumbar support. You get more at the EX-L trim level—with driver-seat memory, leather trim on the front and second-row seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 8-way power adjustability with 4-way power lumbar support extended to the front passenger side. Only the Elite has front-seat ventilation and steering-wheel heating.
Keyless entry and push-button engine start make it easy to gain access to the cabin of the 2021 Odyssey start the engine. For infotainment, Honda integrates a seven-speaker 160-watt AM/FM stereo system, Bluetooth hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, a USB port and an audio jack to hook up mobile devices, a rearview camera, and a 5-inch color LCD screen. At the EX trim level, the comfort and convenience features are increased remarkably with features such as tri-zone automatic climate control, CabinControl and HondaLink app connectivity (to turn smartphones into in-cabin remote controls and remotely performing certain vehicle functions, respectively), Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, HD Radio, a SiriusXM Radio trial subscription, an additional USB port in center console, hands-free text messaging ability, and an 8-inch touchscreen. The EX-L comes with enhancements such as second-row dual USB ports, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with universal transceiver. The Touring gets into luxury territory with features such as the CabinTalk in-car PA system, a third-row USB port, a voice-activated navigation system, the CabinWatch rear-seat monitor system, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Only the Elite has an 11-speaker 550-watt stereo system, wireless phone charging ability, and the HondaVAC vacuum cleaning system.
The aforementioned Honda Sensing suite of driver-assistance features is joined by eight airbags for deployment if there’s a crash. Other standard safety features include vehicle stability assist with traction control, LED daytime running lights, and anti-lock braking with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution. Go with the EX or higher for Honda to add a blind-spot information system with a rear cross-traffic monitor.
